About

My name is Alex Smith. I’m a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy at Carnegie Mellon University. My CMU website is where you can see all my academic interests.

My biggest non-academic interest is music. I spend a lot of time doing stuff with WRCT, Carnegie Mellon’s radio station, which I used to be General Manager of from May 2006 to May 2008. I’ve had a show Tuesday nights, Quantized Energy, for a couple of years. Genres I enjoy (and play) include IDM, glitch, drone, dub, ambient, math rock, post rock, free jazz, free improv, prog, techno, shibuya-kei, dubstep, doom metal, stoner metal, experimental, noise…

I also really enjoy gourmet food, beer, and coffee, and will talk to anyone about them (or over them at any restaurant, bar, or coffeeshop) for far too long if I’m allowed. I’m developing an interest in biking, but I’m still getting there. I’m really bad at go, but I like playing it. I like cities and subways.

My worthless chatter and my recently listened to songs are already available on every page here, but if you wanted you could also look at my photos or my bookmarks.
